Background of the study
Morphosyntactic variation in digital communication reflects the evolving nature of language in response to technological and cultural shifts. Twitter threads, as extended conversations on a microblogging platform, offer a unique opportunity to observe these variations in Nigerian social media. Users construct multi-part messages that often blend standard language with innovative morphosyntactic structures, resulting in a dynamic interplay between traditional grammar and digital creativity (Ibrahim, 2023). This study investigates how Twitter threads serve as a forum for morphosyntactic experimentation, where constraints such as character limits and real-time interaction foster unconventional sentence structures and word formations. Nigerian users employ a variety of techniques, including ellipsis, unconventional punctuation, and the integration of emojis, to modify conventional syntax and morphology (Okafor, 2024). The research seeks to document these variations and analyze the factors driving them, such as social identity, audience engagement, and platform affordances. By comparing morphosyntactic patterns across multiple Twitter threads, the study aims to shed light on the mechanisms of digital language evolution in Nigeria and the implications for broader linguistic theory (Adebayo, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Although morphosyntactic variation is evident in Nigerian Twitter discourse, there is a scarcity of comparative research that examines these patterns in depth. Most studies have focused on isolated instances of innovation rather than providing a systematic analysis of the morphosyntactic shifts that occur in extended digital conversations (Chukwu, 2023). This gap restricts our understanding of how digital constraints and cultural influences collectively shape language structure. Without a detailed examination of Twitter threads, the broader implications of morphosyntactic variation on traditional linguistic frameworks remain unclear, thereby hindering the integration of digital language phenomena into existing theories (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To document morphosyntactic variations in Nigerian Twitter threads.
  2. To identify the factors driving these variations.
  3. To compare digital innovations with conventional language structures.

Research questions

  1. What morphosyntactic variations are present in Nigerian Twitter threads?
  2. How do digital constraints influence these variations?
  3. What are the implications of these innovations for traditional syntax and morphology?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the intricate morphosyntactic variations in Nigerian Twitter threads, offering insights into the broader dynamics of digital language evolution. The findings will assist linguists, educators, and digital communication analysts in understanding how online platforms reshape language structures (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses solely on morphosyntactic variations in Nigerian Twitter threads. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline communication practices, ensuring a focused examination of the specified phenomenon.

Definitions of terms

  • Morphosyntax: The study of word formation and sentence structure.
  • Twitter Threads: A series of connected tweets on Twitter that form a conversation.
  • Language Variation: The differences in language use across different contexts and communities.
